The Bernoulli Bell Siphon is a absolute must have thing in your aquaponic system. This is the best bell siphon for your aquaponic system that creates the ebb and flow in your gravel bed that aerates your aquaponic bed!
If you are a novice or an innovative student of Aquaponics, then you are familiar with a Bell Siphon. A brilliant development by a Greek innovator by the name of Archimedes, it makes use of the principle of physics to produce a reduced pressure inside the siphon tube. The constriction inside the siphon tube in addition to the (2) 90 level bends is the driving force behind the siphon beginning. Once the water is too reduced, it permits air to damage the siphon and also the Trend increases again.
The major purpose of using a bell siphon is to enable the root systems of your plants to receive oxygen and thus avoid root rot. This will permit you to harvest many plants that otherwise would certainly never be able to endure in the water environment.

How to Raise Tilapia and How to Raise Catfish.
When you are fisrt starting out raising fish you should know a few of the basics about fish culture. If you just throw them in a tank of water and forget about them , you are going to be in for a lot of heartache when your fish start dropping like flies.
You are going to want to understand the very first fact and that is fish acclimation. When you purchase your fish from the pet shop of a fish breeder, they are going to have a different set of water variables than the water you are using. Things such as temperature, Ph, ammonia, nitrates and nitrites to mention a few. If you are setting up your tank for the first time and you do not have any fish yet, you wont have to worry about quarantining your fish, but, if you have fish already established and you are throwing some more in with your community tank, you may want to think twice. You may be introducing pathogenic bacteria, or viruses into your tank. You will want to put them in a seperate tank for at least 10 to 14 days and see if they break out with some disease.
So what fish do I recommend for the beginner? Goldfish! They are cheap and you can buy them at any pet shop for about 16 cents a piece. What a bargain!! You at least have some fish to start producing some beneficial bacteria and see if you can sustain the easiest fish to raise.
Once you have established your tank, you may want to start to raise some other fish that you may want to consume or sell. Your best choices are Tilapia, Koi, Catfish, Bass, and Trout to name the most popular ones. However, some require much more atention to filtration and water qualities. If you have ever dined at a top rated restaurant and you have eaten their salad, you have most likely eaten Watercress. It is known for its peppery flavor and its delightful eye appeal as a garnishment. But did you know the real significance of eating Watercress?
Early explorers set sail on voyages across the ocean and were always plagued with a vitamin C deficiency called Scurvy. Ships would often make port on remote islands looking for Orange, Lemon or lime trees to fulfill their galleys with fresh sources of Vitamin C. It wasn’t until years later that they discovered that Watercress had more vitamin C that Oranges. Citrus would spoil quickly on the open seas and would get moldy from the moist hot tropical air. However, Watercress was able to be thrown in a bucket of fresh water and would continue to grow and remain fresh for the cook to use as salads, in soup or stir fry it in with meats for a delicious meal.
The use ofWatercress in aquaponicsis not widely known yet, but as more and more people are discovering the benefits for Watercress, you will see more use of it. Watercress has a very shallow root system. This makes it easy to clean and thin out which will eventually choke itself out from over crowding. The Watercress is easy to remove as it will lift up like a mat of tangled roots. You can then replant new shoots from cuttings about 5 to 6 inches long and stick them in your gravel bed. In a day or two, new leaves will begin to emerge and new roots will shoot out very quickly. The can tolerate a wide range of temperatures as well. They are able to handle low 40′s and high 30′s F without dying. Try to protect them from the frost. if you are growing Watercress in aquaponics ,or a hoop house you will have no problems growing Watercress.
If you are practicing Aquaponics and you are raising Tilapia in your tanks, you will also be happy to know that Tilapia love to consume Watercress as much as they do Duckweed. Now, Duckweed is about 40% protein, but, Watercress has more vitamins that Duckweed. In fact, Watercress has more vitamin C that a full glass of Orange juice, more calcium than a glass full of milk and more Iron that a serving of fresh Spinach. Give your Tilapia a mix of both duckweed and Watercress. If you are what you eat, they your fish also will be healthier and better for you to consume as well.
I wanted to give you a review on these two UV Sterilizers made for your aquariums to eliminate suspended green algae. I recently purchased both of the UV’s within the last month on Amazon. Both of these UV sterilizers offered a 9 watt bulb. The Green Killing Machine has a little sponge filter that filters any large particles that get sucked into the sterilizer. I have them both operating inside a 55 gallon tank in my greenhouse with 4 adult tilapia. They are side by side and are both getting exposed to the same amount of sunlight each day.
Each day i have cleaned them to ensure the best exposure the water can get to the bulbs UV light. I wouldnt think there would be much difference. However, after 2 weeks of watching these two UV sterilizers work, there is a clear winner in this review… the winner is….??

If you have been involved with Aquaponics very long you will have inevitably had the misfortune of a power outage. Get out the gas generator and listen to the roar of that motor for as long as you have no electric. thank heavens you have the generator, but there is another solution. Solar Power! It is a cheap source of power and as long as you have batteries to back up you can run for hours. I have looked into using solar for my entire home. It is costly , right around $20,000, and it will take about 15 years to recoup my investment. But, for my aquaponics system, solar power is a good alternative. You dont have to have year around sunlight like say, Arizona or Florida, although it helps! Here i have a 60 watt 4 panel system. My friends at Urban Farming Guys have set up a solar power system which runs their pumps and heaters. Check out their video below. To purchase this system click the image below.

This is the most exciting part of raising Tilapia. You have spent the money on your tanks, filters, heaters, etc and now you have a female with a mouth full of eggs. So what do we do now? First get a white shallow pan ( so you can see the eggs against a white background) Then fill a squeeze bottle with the water from your tank, not from the tap. The chlorine will kill the eggs. Get a fine mesh net, to ensure that in case the female spits her eggs you don’t lose them on the ground. Next, get a glove with rubber covering to prevent the fish’s fin from pricking your hand, they are razor sharp. remove the tubes in the tank to help make it easier to net the gravid female. Slowly, without stressing the female, scoop her up and slowly grab her around the body with the head facing up. Hold her over the white pan with the tank water in it, hold her mouth open and then flush her mouth with the squeeze bottle to rinse all the eggs from her mouth, If you leave any eggs at all , she will continue to incubate them and will only delay her ability to lay again any time soon.
You will see mostly tanish brown colored eggs. This is good! These are the fertilized eggs. Any eggs that are white are non-fertilized and need to be removed as they will grow mold on them within 3 days. Take a new turkey baster and suck up the bad eggs and discard them. Its easier to do this now than after they are placed in the tumbler.
I like to let the female keep the eggs in her mouth about 5 days before i pull them from her. She has a chance to get rid of the bad eggs and i have personally found i get a 99% success rate with this method.
Now here is a subject that can have an entire website dedicated to this alone. There are several types of filtration systems and then which is the best one for you ? Well, that depends on if you want to make it yourself and save some money. If you are handy with tools, then you might like this method best. If you want to spend money and save time, then you will need to decide which type and model number is best. You will want to decide on biological filtration, mechanical filtration, sedimentation, cyclonic, refugium and the list goes on. The main issue I want to offer you is the various types of filtration and then to point you in the direction of where to find these things to help make it easier for you. The first thing we need to look into is the biological filtration. Many people do not understand this principle and the first thing that needs to be addressed is the “Nitrogen Cycle”.
